By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo

Stakeholders in hospitality business in Nigeria have asked government and corporate organizations to utilize peace and harmony prevalent in Kwara to attract financial flow through tourism and hospitality business.

Speaking with journalists on the sideline of a planned one-day Hospitality Impact and Tourism conference (HITC 2.0) 2025, the convener of the programme, Mrs. Folashade Folayan, stressed the need to change old narratives, saying that North Central geopolitical zone is not all about insecurity.

Folayan, who solicited cooperation of stakeholders on efforts to rebrand Nigeria to outside world against stereotyped perception, said that financial opportunities abound in hospitality business.

She said that Kwara, among other states in the North Central district, represents cultural harmony, historical depth, and untapped tourism potential of the geopolitical zone in Nigeria.

She added that hosting second edition of the HITC in Ilorin is a deliberate effort to decentralize tourism conversations, “showing that growth and opportunity exist beyond traditional hubs like Lagos and Abuja”.

The convener, who said that the conference is relevant today, added that, “In a time when the global economy is shifting, tourism has proven to be one of the most resilient sectors worldwide, a source of jobs, entrepreneurship, and hope.

“For us in Nigeria, the opportunity is clear: every state has stories, culture, and destinations waiting to be harnessed.

“But this growth requires vision, coordination, and partnerships which is exactly what 2.0 stands for”, she said.

She also said that the conference provides a national platform that brings together government officials, tourism professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives to discuss, innovate, and collaborate on the future of Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism industry.

“It’s not just a conference it’s a movement to position Nigeria as a global tourism destination driven by creativity, policy, and people”, she stressed.

Themed, “Tourism Transformed: Empowering People, Shaping Policy, Driving Prosperity”, Folayan said that the one-day meeting will hold on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

“The goal is to empower people, shape policy, and drive prosperity through tourism and hospitality. The meeting seeks to highlight how innovation, professional development, and strategic partnerships can transform the sector into a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy.

“The conference will showcase Kwara’s cultural and tourism potential, strengthen collaboration between public and private sectors, inspire youth participation in hospitality careers, and create visibility and investment opportunities for local businesses.

“It is intentionally impact driven, focused on practical solutions, policy collaboration and local-to-global storytelling.

“It bridges the gap between culture and commerce, celebrating Nigerian excellence while preparing our people and systems for a global audience”, she added.

NIFST at 49: Experts Urge Investment in Research, Innovation to Tackle Nigeria’s Food Insecurity

Experts have called for bold investment in research, innovation, and industry collaboration to end Nigeria’s lingering food insecurity and dependence on imported food.

Dr Bola Osinowo, President of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and Chairman of its Governing Council, made the call on Wednesday in Ilorin at the Institute’s 49th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting.

With the theme “Next Generation Food Science and Technology for Nation Building,” Osinowo said Nigeria must chart a new path driven by research and the education of young food scientists to achieve sustainable food security.

“We want abundant, safe, and nutritious food for all Nigerians. That is the bottom line of what we are doing here.

“To achieve this, we need a transformational agenda—different from what we’ve been doing—anchored on research, innovation, and partnership,” he said.

The NIFST president urged the government to prioritise research and development (R&D) funding, noting that such efforts must link universities and industries to convert scientific findings into practical agricultural solutions.

“When we have more research work, we can transfer it to private industries through a public-private partnership. That way, the research becomes a practical solution for Nigerians,” he said.

Osinowo also called for investment in pest- and disease-resistant crop varieties, saying it would drastically reduce post-harvest losses and ensure food abundance.

“We want government to invest in seedlings that are pest and disease resistant and distribute them to farmers. This will increase harvests and guarantee food availability,” he added.

He emphasised the need to train a new generation of food scientists, engineers, and agricultural technologists while raising public awareness on the importance of food security and nutritional health.

Speaking in the same vein, Emeritus Professor Charles Ogugua of the University of Ibadan’s Department of Food Technology said the conference marked a defining moment for the sector, challenging the next generation to build on past gains.

“What we have not been able to do in the last 49 years, we must now encourage the next generation to tackle in new ways.

“We spend almost $10 billion every year importing food. That’s a disgrace, because Nigeria has the potential to feed itself if we strengthen our agricultural value chain,” he said.

Ogugua decried the slow operationalisation of the Nigerian Council of Food Science and Technology (NCFST), saying its board was yet to be fully inaugurated nearly five years after establishment.

“We agitated for the Council to be created, but it has not really taken off. Without it, the profession remains under-regulated, and this affects food safety and national policy outcomes,” he lamented.

Also speaking, Prof. Bolanle Akinwale, Chairperson of the NIFST Western Chapter, stressed the potential of indigenous crops as functional foods capable of preventing chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.

“By consuming these locally available crops, we can reduce vulnerability to such diseases and improve public health,” Akinwale said.

She noted that the use of indigenous foods aligned with global trends toward sustainable nutrition and could help Nigeria build a healthier population while boosting rural economies.

The conference brought together food scientists, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to explore innovative solutions for food safety, value addition, and national food resilience.

Fraud: POS agents advise CBN to install terminals with cameras

By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo

Ilorin, Sept. 27, 2025 (NAN) The Kwara Association of Professional Point of Sale Agents (KAPPSA), has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to mandate fintech companies and banks to equip POS terminals with cameras and introduce identity verification for transactions above ₦50,000 to curb electronic fraud.

Speaking at a news conference in Ilorin on Saturday, KAPPSA President, Opakunle Ridwan, said that one of the gravest challenges facing POS agents is fraudulent transactions involving stolen debit cards.

Ridwan explained that while banks and ATMs rarely face scrutiny when cash is dispensed from stolen cards, POS agents are often treated as culprits.

According to him, in many instances, months after a transaction, agents are accused, arrested, or even jailed because they cannot produce the identity of a customer.

He raised alarm over what he described as persistent gaps in Nigeria’s financial technology administration that leave POS operators vulnerable to fraud, liability, and systemic inefficiencies.

He said the country’s growing dependence on POS operators for financial inclusion is not being matched by adequate regulatory support, a situation that threatens the stability of the cashless economy.

He described this as unjust and called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to mandate fintech companies and banks to equip POS terminals with cameras and introduce identity verification for transactions above ₦50,000.

He said capturing customer images and National Identification Numbers would not only protect agents but also secure consumers and reduce the scale of electronic fraud in the system.

“Electronic fraud remains a pressing challenge in Nigeria. Data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), show that losses from such activities surged to more than ₦17 billion in 2023.

“With POS transaction volumes rising by over 40 percent in the same year, operators have become a major target for fraudsters”, the President said.

Another recurring problem, Ridwan continued, is the confusion created by unresolved transaction disputes.

Customers frequently experience what he described as “failed transactions” where their bank accounts are debited but the POS terminal records no payment, and instead of the banks taking responsibility, agents are forced to shoulder the blame and deal with irate customers.

He added that a transaction should be either successful or failed, never both, and urged the CBN to implement clearer dispute resolution protocols to protect both consumers and operators.

“In 2021 alone, the CBN received more than 200,000 complaints related to electronic payments, many of them linked to POS operations”, he said.

The President also used the medium to highlight the need for financial empowerment for its members, adding POS agents are critical players in Nigeria’s push toward financial inclusion, especially in underserved communities where banks are absent.

“Many agents, he said, are young entrepreneurs who put their own resources on the line daily, yet they lack access to affordable credit”, he stressed.

He appealed to government and financial institutions to provide soft loans under fair conditions, arguing that supporting POS agents should be seen not as charity but as an investment in Nigeria’s economy, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Ridwan concluded by pledging KAPPSA’s readiness to collaborate with regulators, banks, fintechs, and law enforcement in building a transparent and sustainable POS sector that works for all stakeholders.

Kwara South political representation, weak since 1999- KSDI

By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo

Kwara South Development Initiative (KSDI), on Monday decried the representation of elected political office holders at the federal level since 1999 as weak and ineffective.

Speaking at a Strategic Consultation forum of Kwara South leaders tagged “Reawakening the Giants” , convener of the forum, Eng Jonhson Adewumi, regretted that in spite of the increasing federal budget in trillions since 1999, the region has nothing tangible to show.

“I will be speaking the mind of majority of people gathered here today: the political representation of Kwara South since 1999 is weak and not effective.

“But we have had five Senators and several members of the Federal House of Representatives.

“Our citizens have chaired several committees in both chambers of the National Assembly But
with no tangible contribution”, he said.

On the issue of insecurity threatening the communities, Adewumi lamented that at least seven gallant vigilante men have paid the supreme sacrifices in fighting insurgency in the area.

He called on stakeholders in the area to participate actively in securing their communities even as he called for huge agricultural investment to transform the vast abandoned land into viable agricultural investments .

“Our demography is changing from Yoruba to Fulani/ Hausa and with grave consequences “, he added.

He praised Gov. AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq for his government efforts in steming the tide of banditry and kidnapping in the communities.

In his remarks, the state Governor, who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff , Mrs Adebukola Babalola said his administration has so far constructed 63 kilometres of road with additional
409 kilometres ongoing.

He assure that “no rod will be spared” in the fight against banditry and insecurity confronting the senatorial districts and other parts of the state.

“I urge you to continue supporting our efforts in all spheres, particularly in strengthening human security across the state.

Security is a collective responsibility, and your partnership and support for the security agencies is vital in this monumental task”,he stressed.

2027: APC elder caucus make case for Kwara North

By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo

The Elders Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara has resolved that the 2027 governorship ticket of the ruling party should go to Kwara north senatorial district in the interest of fair play, equity and justice.

The Chairman of the APC Elders Caucus, Mr Kunle Sulaiman, disclosed this during a news conference at the NUJ press centre in Ilorin on Friday.

Mr Sulaiman who was flanked by other members, said that the Kwara Central and Kwara South had spent 20 years and eight years, respectively, as governor in the state.

“You may wish to recall that on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022 at this same venue, this caucus addressed the press and made its stand known on the issue of zoning arrangements for the APC gubernatorial candidature that the then incumbent, Malam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq from Kwara Central, be allowed to have another shot to complete two terms of eight years.

“Which would make Kwara Central senatorial district to have spent 20 years all together as chief executive of the state, while Kwara south senatorial district has also produced governor for eight years.

“In the same vein, we posit that it is in the interest of fair play, equity and justice that we members of the Kwara APC elders caucus, unanimously agreed that the next gubernatorial candidate for our great party should emerge from Kwara north senatorial district,”the Chairman said.

Sulaiman who commended Gov. AbdulRazaq for making them proud with his great performances across the state.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for setting Nigeria on a recovery course from her dwindling economy.

Listing the governor’s developmental achievements across parts of the state, Sulaiman , however , regretted that, “some of these achievements have evoked some negative comments and reactions from some members of the opposition political parties.

“It is obvious that every developmental policy, programme and project, may pose initial but temporary discomfort,” he said.

He emphasized that developmental efforts of the government in Ilorin, the capital city, are in line with the Urban Renewal Project, under the New Ilorin City Master Plan.

“Therefore, we would like to advise opposition parties to display a sense of patriotism by supporting and joining hands with the laudable programmes of this administration for the progress of Kwara state,” he added.

He advised the residents and indigenes affected by the ongoing urban renewal drive of the governor to related with government agencies, rather than be used by the opposition to foment crisis.

“For those aggrieved members of the public, who might have complained on the effects of the ongoing Urban Renewal Programme, they are advised to seek redress through appropriate quarters of government, rather than allowing themselves to become agent of opposition”, he said.

He appealed to eligible voters in kwara who are yet registered and obtained voters card or whose voters card is lost or whom have relocated to the state to take advantage of the ongoing voters registration exercise by obtaining their voters card .
