The Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA) on Sunday disbursed a sum of N1.5 million to 90 widows and indigent women as its 2019 Annual Ramadan Empowerment programme.
The beneficiaries received between N10,000 to N30,000 to support their petty trades.
Delivering sermon at the programme, Mallam Abdulsalam Olayinwola, the Chief Imam of Radio Kwara Mosque commended the association for alleviating the suffering of the women.He urged well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to emulate the gesture of the union.
He explained that what some people need to make difference was a meagre amount of money.
The cleric admonished people to always the path of Islam, which he said was the only remedy to the prevailing societal challenges.
Earlier in his address, the President of the association, Alhaji Salaudeen Babatunde said that the fund was made available by a philanthropist, who is an indigene of Ilorin towards human capital development.
He said that the programme had become an annual event since the year it was first conceived.
Also speaking, Alhaji Uthman Jagunma, the National Publicity Secretary of the association sought collaboration of well-to-do individuals to further assist the downtrodden in the society.
He said the association had wanted to capture more beneficiaries, but had to pen it down to 90 for the money to make meaning to their businesses.
The beneficiaries were drawn from the five local government areas that made up the emirate.
FUTO graduate drowns in swimming pool
A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, drowned on Saturday in a swimming pool in one of the hotels near the institution.

It is gathered that the victim, Stephen Igwilo, was a 2018 graduate of Microbiology.
He was among the graduates of the varsity who had their convocation ceremony two months ago, a campus source told our Correspondent on Sunday.
Eziobodo is one of the host communities of FUTO, which is situated in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
A source said, “The victim went out with his friends, but he drowned in a swimming pool in a hotel in Eziobodo.
“He was a graduate of Microbiology and he was among the students who had their convocation two months ago.
“It was a said loss. The university is in sad mood.”
The Public Relations Officer of FUTO, Uche Nwaelue, confirmed the incident when contacted.
She said the School had yet to do anything because the “incident happened on a weekend.”
She confirmed that the victim was one of the fresh graduates of the institution who recently had their convocation.
The FUTO spokesperson said, “The incident happened on a weekend. So, the management of the School is yet to take any action.
“The victim was among the graduates who had their convocation a few months ago in our School. It is, indeed, a sad development.”
Police arrest Regina Daniels’ brother after marriage to Ned Nwoko
The Delta State Police Command have arrested the elder brother to Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, less than two weeks after she got married to Delta State born billionaire Mr Ned Nwoko.
The video of the arrest which surfaced online showed Lawrence Daniels in handcuff.
In the video, Regina’s mother Rita Daniels, claimed it was the fourth time the police was arresting Lawrence and that they kept arresting her children, harassing them and taking away their peace.
The police were also seen with their guns in the video shared by one twitter user Laila Ijeoma, while the leader of the team was seen telling Rita Daniels to talk to him.
Lawrence also claimed he did nothing to warrant the arrest yet he is being handcuffed; the family kept repeating that they did nothing to warrant the arrest or even being handcuffed.
One of the boys present at the scene who is believed to also be one of her children showed his wounded face claiming he was hit with the gun by one of the policemen.
Regina Daniels’ mother, Rita kept asking what they have done for the Police to keep trying to tarnish her image and why can’t they be allowed to move freely. She claims this is the fourth time this will repeat itself.

UniIlorin 49+: ASUU demands apology for late Oduleye, others

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday asked the authorities of university of Ilorin to tender an apology to the family of late Professor Samson Olatunde Oduleye, a member of the Unilorin 49+ who died recently and others vindicated by Supreme Court Judgement.
Oduleye, was a former chairman of ASUU, Unilorin Chapter and he was aged 75.
The union also asked the federal government to show evidence that it has captured in the 2019 budget, the balance of N25 billion earned academic allowance recently released to universities across the country.
ASUU national president, professor Abiodun Ogunyemi, made declaration while speaking with journalists in Ilorin at the sideline of ‘‘Day of Tributes’’ held in honour of the late Oduleye who was a member of the Unilorin 49+ held at the deceased’s Adewole Estate residence, Ilorin.
The day of tributes which was attended by leaders of ASUU from various branches across the country, was at the instance of Unilorin 49 +.
While paying glowing tributes to the deceased, Oguyemi said the Supreme Court judgement which favoured the affected lecturers is enough for the university management to admit that it ‘‘acted wrongly and should own up to its wrong doing’’.
‘‘Professor Oduleye won all his court cases against university of Ilorin. The University should therefore see the passing away of this relentless advocate of excellence, justice and fairness in the institution as occasion for sober reflection and opportunity to mend its ways’’, he said.
While describing the deceased as ‘‘a comrade prof’’, the ASUU president who presented a 96 pages ‘‘book of tributes’’ containing over 74 entries at the occasion, said ‘‘the university owes him (late Oduleye) and his family an apology, as it also does many other victims’’ of the Unilorin 49 + struggle.
On ASUU threat to mobilise its members for industrial action should the federal government failed to fulfill agreement reached with the union, the ASUU president, said the union had shelved it planed strike.
Ogunyemi, however demanded for an evidence to show that the balance of the earned academic allowance had been ‘‘mainstreamed in the budget’
Accident kills 1, injures other on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Ogun Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed one person dead and one other seriously injured in an accident which involved two vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Clement Oladele, who made the confirmation on Sunday in Ota, Ogun state, disclosed that the incident occurred on Saturday evening.
Oladele explained that the auto-crash involved a Toyota Jeep with registration number LSD 37 BR and an unregistered trailer.
The sector commander said the Toyota Jeep lost control due to speeding and rammed into the trailer at Isara-Sapade axis of the highway.
“The corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the Mortuary at Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun, while the injured is receiving treatment at the same hospital, ”he said.
The FRSC boss, however, advised motorists to be cautious and obey traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
He also admonished motorists to maintain the stipulated 50 km per hour maximum speed limit within construction zones and refrain from overtaking till they were clearly out of the construction zones, as violators were liable to be prosecuted.
