Ilorin, Oct. 4, 2024 (NAN) Prof Mahmud Adebayo, of the Department Private and Property Law of the University of Ilorin has advocated inclusion of women’s right in the nation’s constitution, as part of the third generation of rights.
Adebayo made the submission on Friday in Ilorin during his paper presentation at the 265th Inaugural Lecture of the University entitled: “On the Reproductive Authonomy of My Right or Not My Choice”.
The don who teaches in the Faculty of Law of the University of Ilorin said the right includes capacity to reproduce and access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of regulation of fertility.
“There is also the right of access to health care for safe pregnancy and child birth. To experience a pleasurable sexuality, which is an important means of communication and love between couple.
“Sexual right include liberty and freedom in the responsible exercise of sexuality. Sexual rights are important because they ensure respect within a relationship,” he said.
According to him, gender equality cannot be obtained without sexual rights and that without respect for sexual rights as human rights, women and girls are at the risk of genital mutilation.
He observed that the reproductive health rights encircled certain human rights that are already recognised by national laws and international human rights documents and consensus instruments and covenants.
“Health rights consist of the recognition of the basic rights of all couple to decide freely and responsibly; the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have information and means to do so and the highest standard of reproductive health.
“It also includes the right to make decisions concerning reproduction free from discrimination, coercion and violence and the rights of women to have control over her body and decide freely on matters related to their sexuality,” he said.
Adebayo asserts that a manifestation of these rights suggests protection from violence against women.
He postulated that these rights will prevent violence against women, trafficking in women and children; sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation and early girl child marriage.
“More concerned efforts should be made in educating men and women about the advantages of allowing women exercise, not only their economic rights, but also reproductive rights.
“This will improve the quality of life of women and their family and by implications the whole nation,” he said.
